biography

Stuart started drumming at the age of 12, following the advice of an inspirational local teacher Tom Reavey. Stuart continued learning throughout secondary school following graded exams and gained his grade 8 at age 16. Stuart played for the school jazz and concert bands and also percussion in the orchestra.

The bands frequently had tours to destinations in Europe including Barcelona, Lake Garda and Saltsburg. During this time Stuart was the main drummer for the jazz band, playing a mixture of big band swing, funk and latin arrangements. Stuart also played in a division of the Boys Brigade marching band entering the national band championships and a local samba band getting to the semi final of the prestigious Youth Music Awards.

Stuart studied music at GCSE and AS level but felt the need to further his contemporary music education. Stuart studied at the Academy of Contemporary music in Guildford from 2006-2009, studying with many top tutors including Pete Riley, Mike Sturgis and Stu Roberts. During his time there Stuart also got the chance to experience master classes by fantastic drummers like: Dave Weckl, Andrew Small, John Blackwell Jr and many more. Stuart completed the higher diploma course with a Merit and went on to complete a BA Hons in contemporary music performance. This culminated in a final recital at the Students' Union in Surrey. Stuart performed 5 of his own arrangements, backed by top session players Andy Staples and Jez Davies. Stuart has worked with many original bands and artists whilst studying at the ACM including: Dr Pop, Jumpstart, The Jump Pilots, Kamla, Orison and many others.

Stuart has also worked with several top-level function bands including: Beats Working, The Duffys, Save the Last Dance, The Celebration Band and The Full Whack. Stuart’s recording credits include many of the above artists and also sessions for Rethink, the mental health charity.
